HeaderWestland/Utrecht Hypotheekbank
ParagraphIn the 19th century, during the years of industrialisation and urbanisation, there was a great demand for new housing, expansion of harbours etc. Mortgage banks played a major role in the financing of such projects. During these prosperous years, the 'Utrechtsche Hypotheekbank’ was established in 1882, followed by the 'Westlandsche Hypotheekbank’ in 1893. Around the turn of the century, there were more than 70 mortgage banks in the Netherlands.
Before and after World War II, many mortgage banks were taken over and integrated. In the sixties, there were two large mortgage banks left: the Utrechtsche and the Westlandsche. In 1969, they merged into the 'Westland/Utrecht Hypotheekbank’ (WUH). Adverse developments on the Dutch property market in the eighties resulted in a crisis, but with the financial help of Nationale-Nederlanden, which took over the company in 1985, WUH was able to recover during the nineties.
The different predecessors had no real logos. The Utrechtsche Hypotheekbank used a symbol of a rider with a kneeling man at his feet. In the sixties the initials were incorporated with the Utrecht’s Cathedral Tower. Since the merger in 1969 the logo shows a square surrounded by houses in green, until now the logo of WU.
